One of the ongoing challenges in politics is that elected officials are generally constrained in the same way that we all are: Our own personal experience serves as a benchmark for everything else we experience. This is not an unbreakable limit, of course, and recent efforts to encourage a broader understanding of what others have experienced have helped shape the political discourse. But it’s still hard for anyone not to look back on their own experiences and assume that others went through something similar, however unique or however long ago it may have been.
We are all hostage to our past experience.
