Most Democrats say that they tend to view Republicans as political opponents. Most Republicans say that they tend to view Democrats as enemies.

This is the heart of the matter. Most Dems view the Reps as valid and worthy of some respect. Most Reps view Dems as invalid and someone to be destroyed by any means possible.
