Republicans in the Iowa House and Senate are quickly approving bills that would shorten the state’s early voting period by 11 days, limit absentee ballot collection and create new criminal charges for county auditors who fail to follow state rules.
Republican lawmakers say the measures would ensure uniform election procedures across Iowa’s 99 counties, uphold the integrity of Iowa’s elections and make sure county auditors follow the law. The bills’ opponents say the measures would make it more difficult to vote early and would be hardest on elderly Iowans, those with disabilities and Iowans who have transportation issues.
Utterly predictable, but will only have the effect of disenfranchising legal voters.
