A Times examination of the 77 days between election and inauguration shows how a lie the former president had been grooming for years overwhelmed the Republican Party and stoked the assault on the Capitol.
The buildup was deliberate and calculated to destroy faith in democracy. It also had the effect of making this election the most secure in history since the secretaries of state went overboard to try to ensure trust. It kind of worked, but Trump’s bullhorn drowned them out.
